My self-care journey: do something out of your comfort zone.

One thing that has helped me in the last year to become more myself is kickboxing. I was in a dark place mentally, I was in a bad relationship, I sat in the house all day, and I lost contact with all friends. I needed something to get me out of a funk. I had a gym membership but barely ever went. I saw an advertisement for kickboxing at a local studio, they were having a 6 week challenge that would end just before my birthday. I went back and forth in my head and ultimately I decided, “what the heck I’ve got nothing to lose”. I signed up for the 6 week challenge and anxiously waited for orientation day.

Walking into the studio I had a panic attack- there were so many people! I had to convince myself every day to make my way to class for an hour.

Over the next 6 weeks I did things I didn’t think my body could do. I lost 6 inches off my waistline and 2 inches from my neck, I was really starting to feel good about myself! I decided to continue on with kickboxing in hopes that my journey with self-care would expand and keep going strong. Having that extra push from a group of people all focused on one thing really helped me concentrate on what I wanted to accomplish. My mother saw how much fun I was having in my classes and how much better I was doing, she wanted in on it too. Having my mom going to classes with me at the same facility really amped up my drive. We held each other accountable for the number of classes we went to and stuck to our schedule of 4 days a week! The people you keep in your life, the relationships you have with others, they mold and form you into who you are. If you want to do better, to be better, look at the company you keep. Surround yourself with people who encourage you and celebrate with you all victories whether big or small.

Everything was going great, I was happy, I was hitting my fitness goals, I joined a community of amazing women…..

But then life hit really hard… See you next week!
