Feature Friday: Kenna “Kennadee” Saunders

Written by Lacey Roy, freelance writer

Seemingly quiet with an easy smile and a warm laugh that sounds like a hug feels, chatting on the front porch with her is perfect. With her guitar in her hands she is a force to be reckoned with. Powerful energy to match her smooth, strong voice and you can’t take your eyes off her. Connecting emotions through music, Kenna has an innate talent for bringing people together and relating to all of them, all levels, at the same time.

Playing with a band for almost four years, Kenna decided to try solo gigs as well. Fighting the general idea of “just a musician” she tested the waters and challenged that idea. They don’t take it seriously, they don’t see it as a job, and it IS a job…”  Promoting, scheduling and playing, Kenna does it all.

Everyone can identify with balancing family, work, and more but Kenna’s happiness radiates through that thanks to her organizational skills and scheduling mind-set to help the balance. Staying on top of everything, the balance comes from separating each and making sure time is spent wisely where it needs to be, family first. With close relationships with her kids and ridiculously happily married, it’s evident where her priority is.

My admiration for Kenna deepens when we talk about her courage to follow her dreams. “…[The] beginning was very terrifying” yet her favorite attribute of sheer determination, tenacity and will power kept her going. Layered in Blues and Soul music, Kenna’s original pieces are mesmerizing as she lays out her emotions and feelings, captivating everyone within ear shot. “Meeting people, talking to different people…that’s my favorite part.”

Spending time with Kenna is inspiring, listening to her music is captivating and knowing her is a gift.
